PROJECT NARRATIVE

Chris Hani Station: A Critical Upgrade for PRASA

Revitalizing public transport infrastructure in the Western Cape.

The comprehensive refurbishment and renovation of Chris Hani Station, executed by the DINGA SOMBS JV on behalf of PRASA, is a landmark project restoring dignity and safety to a key commuter hub in Khayelitsha, Cape Town. With a contract value of R10,625,756.97 (incl. VAT), the project spans new ablutions, security hardening, electrical works, and civil infrastructure.

Scope of Work

  • Ablutions & Public Facilities: Installation of public toilets, mass area mirrors, handwash basins, accessible grab rails, and toilet roll holders.
  • Security Hardening: Anti-bandit doors, bulletproof glazing for the ticket office, PA system setup, and perimeter fencing (95% complete).
  • Electrical & Lighting: Platform shelter lights, kiosks, flood lighting, and walkway lights.
  • Civil Works: Driveway layer works, asphalt resurfacing, and stormwater management preparation.

Current Execution & Technical Installations

Phase 2 is tracking 8% ahead of schedule, with 91% of work completed against an 83% time elapse. Key installations in progress include:

  • Ticket Office Security: Anti-bandit doors and bulletproof glazing are in manufacturing, expected by mid‑December 2025. Existing door frames will be removed prior to delivery.
  • Electronics & PA: Engagement with Vhukudo Security Systems underway; however, additional guidance is required for the broader electronics scope.
  • Perimeter Fencing: 95% complete. The remaining 5% is delayed by a neighbouring scrapyard encroaching onto PRASA property.
  • HVAC: Awaiting final fan installation before commissioning and full testing.
